Moving to a New State in 2021: 3 Tips to Smooth the Process
By Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group
In reality, it is a lot to handle. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take beforehand to make the move to Atlanta less anxious than it may be otherwise.
3 Ways to Ease the Process of a State-to-State Move
Though the task will never be totally stress-free, these three steps may help reduce your stress levels.
Tip 1: If possible, complete your paperwork in advance.
Moving always necessitates changing your permanent address. Vital documents, websites, and service providers will all need to be contacted. Handling these steps beforehand might allow you to check this item off your schedule and concentrate more fully on your new residence when you arrive.
If you move between states, however, you have the extra task of procuring a new driver's license as well. As with the change of address regulations, most states have a set time period by which you must exchange your old license for a new one, so be sure that you verify with your new state's DMV website to understand the time frame in which getting a new license will be a requirement.
Various states require an in-person visit to the DMV, others allow you to finish the entire process online. Managing this chore before yourmove will lessen the transition and free up valuable settling-in time in your new place of residence—especially during the pandemic, when concerns of virus spread complicate even the simplest tasks.
Tip 2: Pack with both short-term and long-term trips in mind.
In one way, an interstate move is like a road trip and a move all together into one. Not only are you packing up all your worldly possessions for transport, but you're in addition preparing to spend at least a day or two road-tripping to reach your new place.
Before you get to the final chores of packing up, always make sure to take time out to pack suitcases for yourself (and, if applicable, for your family) which will include everything you'll want for the following several days travelling:
- Face masks and hand sanitizer
- Changes of clothes
- Toiletries
- Medications
- ID's and documentation
- Money
Also don't forget about your furry friends! Be certain they have a few days' worth of supplies ready to go in addition.
Tip 3: Select an experienced interstate moving company in Atlanta.
All moving companies have specialties. While a few are professionals at local relocations, others have created systems and structures to support interstate and cross-country moves. If talking to possible moving companies in Atlanta, always make sure to ask direct questions regarding their skills and areas of expertise. Be sure to check out consumer reviews, question friends and contacts and take their knowledge into consideration.
While it can be tempting just to select the cheapest quote you find after a quick Google search, we've all been around long enough to recognize that the least expensive quote isn't always the wisest choice in the end. If you are facing the pressure of an interstate move, especially during an ongoing pandemic, you will want to know you are in capable hands the whole way.
